Flick, a funky new salon set up in an upmarket area of New Delhi, is a happening place for kids to get a cool haircut
A new happening salon has opened up in the upmarket area of Greater Kailash in New Delhi for patrons under 12 years of age only. The salon, exclusively for kids, is a lively, buzzing place with interesting stations designated for haircuts, shampoo, spa, nail art and pedicure.
Sanjana Puri and Deepika Khaitan, co-founders of Flick, conceptualised this exciting space to groom kids and make them feel special. Keeping in mind that the boys don’t feel left out, the décor has been kept gender neutral with a playful twist. Spread over 1450 sq. ft., the play area (read, salon) is done up in lively colours such as red, yellow, blue and hints of green and pink.
The designers refrained from an elitist design and instead focussed on keeping it lively and kid-friendly. Pop colours and interesting graphics adorn the walls. The spa area and green room are the only two areas where there is a generous use of pink as it is for girls only. The areas are customised with low seating furniture to accommodate the young clientele.
The furniture has been kept white in order to balance out the excess colour in all other rooms. Only some areas such as the nail art station will have pops of colour on furniture such as yellow and fuchsia on Chesterfield sofas. The vitrified tiles for the flooring chosen in neutral grey and white gypsum ceilings balance out the otherwise colourful walls. Totally high on graphic quotient, the salon exudes warmth with a hint of attitude.
The designers have worked intricately on a detailed checklist for the final outcome. The owners wanted to refrain from a typical Montessori school design or include cartoon characters as kids get an overdose of these in their daily lives too. Instead the walls are prepped up with colourful, peppy thought bubbles. The reception area is a cool welcoming space with a pair of ‘pop art’ sunglasses sticking out at the back.
The space is divided into hair cutting salons, shampoo stations, nail bar, pedicure stations and recreational/party area. The salon has a bold pop art visual theme. This enabled use of bright colours, layering of words’ synonyms, usage of popular commercial symbols and cultural icons such as advertisement and comic graphics on the walls.
The recreation area reflects functional luxury. The area has white tables with colourful legs and colourful mix of accent sofas. The walls are dressed up with interesting elements that a kid would relate to such as board games like—snakes and ladders, dart games, chalk boards, canvas shoes among other things.
The owners of Flick, through pop art visual theme and a strong design language, have managed to design a fun, easy-going and laidback space for kids. The experience of taking your kid for a haircut will never be the same again.
