Sumeet Nath does what he does best, that is designing hospitality projects. An existing Roadhouse Bar was revamped into an Oriental fine dining restaurant named Kylin in Holiday Inn in Delhi. The client brief was to renovate the current space following the Oriental Kylin theme with minimum damage to the existing structure. The design team headed by Nath and Tanya Khanna brought winning details to the project that ensured timely completion.

Flowing spaces

The plush interiors of the restaurant resonates a mellow Asian design language in an Oriental environment. The elegance and dim lighting, understated and inviting, creates an inimitable dining experience at Kylin.

Spatially divided into a bar lounge and restaurant space, one enters through the bar area which also serves as a waiting area for the restaurant. The ambience is cosy with warm and soft lighting highlighting the tastefully done bar and lounge space. The bar leads to the soothing dining space where the display Sushi counter and Teppanyaki grill bring excitement to the pan-Asian food vibe. The whole area is well spread out with careful spacing of tables and jaali partitions to create private spaces for patrons. The naturally diffused light through these jaali panels add another layer of interest to the relaxing and luxurious environment.

“The most fascinating part of the project has to be the display Sushi counter and Teppanyaki grill as the live kitchen adds thrill and excitement to the dining area. It adds to the narrative of the oriental vibe of the space creating an exhilarating experience,” explains Nath.

Floor to Ceiling Layout

The choice of materials and colour palette were retained or modified as per the existing structural details that were retained and were also in accordance with Kylin as a brand. The layout exhibits straight lines and the simplistic and linear design approach is highlighted by the arrangement of furniture and jaali patterns. The wall panelling and wooden flooring, leather panels on the bar counter façade, the lucent pendant lights covered with the same jaali pattern similar to the ones on the partitions form an oriental narrative.

“The major challenge in this project was how Roadhouse bar metamorphosed into a fine dine Kylin restaurant with live kitchen, while retaining the existing elements like flooring and ceiling which were incorporated within the design. Another challenge was the limited operating hours as it was still a working space during the design/concept stage,” states Sumeet Nath.

Fusion Tones

A blend of contemporary and traditional architectural elements ties the entire space together. Aesthetically, the shades of grey and beige in upholstery accentuate the usage of tinge of red in shelving, fabric and artefacts; and emphasise the East-Asian vibe. The use of rich, earthy tones in the colour palette creates a warm space and elevates the mood and ambience for the customers. The use of modern materials in fusion with rough and glossy textures generates an amalgam of harmony and creates a cohesive space.

In short, Kylin creates a perfect ambience for patrons with its influence drawn from the Orient East with a casual amalgamation of modern, contemporary elements.
